Fitness Black Book – My First Glimpse at Online Fitness Blogs

Feb 26th, 2011

If you’re like me then your first and longest running source for information was fitness magazines and books. I used to think these were where the elite fitness people got their information and if I followed the advice I could be counted among their ranks. As hard as I tried however I could never achieve the results that they said I would get. What made it worse is that they had loads of pictures of people who supposedly followed these routines and they looked amazing… it was so demotivating!

health magazine cover
[Here is a typical example of a health and fitness magazine. A cover with someone in very good physical fitness, no doubt highly photoshopped. Whether these models actually follow the routines in the magazine and take the supplements advertised is highly questionable.]

Sooner or later I came to realise that actually all these fitness magazines and books were full of absolute crap. Yes there was the occasional gold nugget in there somewhere, but just like the internet you had to wade through a whole sea of crap before you found it. They would sometimes feature “real life” people who had used the information and products and had achieved spectacular results, what they don’t tell you is that these people ARE the exception to the rule.

What health and fitness magazines are really about (and many books to be honest) is making money through the sale of products or advertising. It is my recommendation that you never even look at one of these again, you’ll be doing your wallet a favour! Big…. muscle (or fat) is NOT beautiful.

FBB to the Rescue!

Back in 2008 I was surfing the web looking for some information about how to achieve the body that I thought was attractive, and that most (if not all) people I spoke to thought was attractive. It was then that I stumbled across Fitness Black Book created by Rusty Moore.

I had been searching for information about how I could gain the ideal amount of muscle mass for my body.

The following is the post I found.

“How to Quickly Gain the Ideal Amount of Muscle Mass for Your Body Type.”

the right amount of muscle
["In my opinion, soldiers of elite military units like the Navy Seals have the ideal body size" - Rusty Moore]

In this article Rusty went on to confirm the beliefs that I deeply held that had been fighting against this “more is better” culture in muscle building and fitness circles. Rusty explained that training for size is OK as long as you don’t go overboard.

Fitness Black Book was a breath of fresh air to me. It flew in the face of so much that I had read before, it just made a better “fit” with life. Gone were the days of big puffy muscles which took hours of excessive gym work (and human made chemicals) to build and in was a new goal of building a body like a GQ model, which most people agree is actually attractive… and functional.

If you haven’t yet checked out his site I thoroughly recommend that you do. Rusty has a wealth of knowledge about fitness, health, and nutrition built up over many years of real world experience. He also has a policy of giving away as much useful and applicable information for free as he can, so whatever you’re looking for I’m sure you’ll find something there for you. Check out his site: Fitness Black Book

Very interesting article I like the sound of it!
I love getting these type of fitness magazines and totally agree some might be photo shopped (especially highlight those minute contours for a sudden 6 pack) and also agree I think the workouts they put in there are not realistic, I know I’ve tried them.
For sure I’ve visited Fitness Black Book and read the free booklet called Vacation Blue Print (?)
which covers in detail how to get a lean muscular shape in a short amount of time! Highly recommend that for a good source … better than any Mens Fitness Mags and with no Monster Protein Adds!

Magazines used to be where I got all my information from, I must admit! However when I started understanding that a lot of the people were photoshop to look better and that a lot of the models were on some drug I quickly changed and did my own research. Nice post and yeah FBB is a wonderful site for information especially if you want a lean tone body without oversized muscles.
